For parents, one of the things that worry when it will deliver the vaccine to the baby is crying that comes after.
When injected the baby will cry because the baby was uncomfortable and sick. But doctors from Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia found an easy way to help calm a crying baby without using any medicine.
Dr. John Harrington who did the study find tricks 5 S’s:
1. Swaddling, which surrounds the baby in a blanket like a burrito similar
2. Placing the baby on his side or stomach
3. Make a shushing sound
4. Cradling baby
5. Give him something to suck like breastfeeding or pacifier
Breastfeeding also helps to reduce pain and soothe the child as it gives skin contact and distract the child. Besides milk sugar known to have painkilling effects.
According to a study published in the journal Pediatrics if the baby gets 4 out of 5 tricks usually crying will stop within 45 seconds after the injection.
“Some doctors sometimes use sugar to cope with the pain, but this is a bad drug because it does not help solve the problem of obesity that is currently facing,” Dr. Harrington said, as quoted by CNN.
Parents who use this trick will trigger the 5 S’s calming reflex in infants. Actually, this technique can help when a baby has colic, then Dr. Harrington decided to investigate whether this method can help infants vaccinated out.
The results of this study also showed that the 5 S’s trick 2 times more effective in calming babies than with giving liquor which has been the gold standard.
“Infants who received the sugar solution was still crying until 2 minutes after the injection, but most of the infants who received physical intervention to stop crying after 45 seconds to 1 minute,” said Dr Harrington.
